Description India’s Rogue Historians: How They Fought Hindus At Ayodhya & Lost examines the contentious and divisive role played by Marxist historians in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case. No other issue, apart from the Ram Janmabhoomi debate, illustrates how this small group of ‘eminent historians’ used history as a political tool to promote their version of ‘secularism’. Their interventions not only thwarted multiple attempts at negotiations to settle the dispute but also fuelled a sense of intransigence within the Muslim community. The Ram Janmabhoomi case was both a movement to reclaim the sacred site and to correct distortions in Indian history. For the first time, the courts subjected Marxist historiography to meticulous scrutiny. The Supreme Court of India dismissed their ‘history’ as ‘mere opinions’, devoid of facts. The Allahabad High Court, apart from exposing the intense prejudice of these historians, has underlined the malicious influence they have exerted on society. Besides deconstructing the depositions of Marxist historians in the High Court, the book extensively explores the archaeological evidence that provided a decisive breakthrough. The findings revealed an underlying structure indicating that the site was once a temple before the construction of the Babri mosque. For the first time, these findings have been thoroughly examined, persuasively proving that the claims of Marxist historians and archaeologists were not misleading but entirely fabricated.
